This is a great lens - nicely made (though much of the body is plastic) - and a great value. The vibration reduction makes a big difference. On the first two days out with the lens, I got a few amazing photographs I would not have been able to take before.

One caveat - as a 55-200 lens, the widest zoom setting is still somewhat telephoto - so for some interior shots and closer building and landscape shots it is still good to have a wider lens such as the typical Nikon 18-55 kit lens. As changing lenses risks getting dust in the camera an on the sensor, several of my friends have opted for the more expensive Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras so they only need the one lens when traveling, but I really could not justify the added cost.

Bottom line: I am absolutely loving the new lens and it has already re-ignited my creative photographic spark. It's definitely added to the enjoyment I am getting from my camera, and to the results I am getting.

The lens is a full frame lens. On a DSLR body like the Pentax K2000 it behaves like a 105mm-450mm lens with no issues with vigneting. Because only the center of the lens is used in modern Pentax cameras you also get the best sharpness the lens can give you.

At 70mm (105mm equivalent) the lens is reasonably sharp at full open f/4 aperture. At f/5.6 it gets good sharpness.

At 180mm (270mm equivalent) the lens is usably sharp at full open aperture. At f/8.0 it gets good sharpness.

At 300mm (450mm equivalent) the lens is soft at full open aperture. At f/8.0 it gets average sharpness but gets a little better at f/11.

General Contrast: Average at most times but I never feel it is lacking. Just not impressive like some prime lenses.

Lens Distortion: Hardly any lens distortion to talk about.

Chromatic aberrations can sometimes be seen beyond 200mm (easily corrected in Photoshop)

Focus Speed: Average to slow focus speed. Not good to track fast moving objects or small flying insects. Not saying it is bad but you can react faster than the lens can keep up on a K2000.

Macro: Begins at 180mm (270mm equivalent)and at f/8 you can get some really nice pictures. The minumum focal range of 3 feet makes macro hand held shoots harder. Not a problem with a tripod. The magnification is good even if it is not a true macro lens.

Mechanical Quality: A little stiff to zoom in, manual focus ring is OK. Feels a little cheap at times from all the plastic. Metal mount and decent hood. Large as to be expected from a full frame lens but not heavy.

Price: You get a lot of lens for your money.

Use: This lens does better outdoors with lots is light. The long focal range at the short end (70mm, 105mm effective) makes it impractical for small spaces (unless in Macro mode and even then you need 3 feet to focus). On the other hand if you get enough light portraits pictures at 70mm (105mm effective) at f/5.6 - f/8.0 can come out nice. With enough light and f/11 even 300mm (450mm) is totally usable for large prints after a little Photoshop.

Conclusion: Maybe the best of the low end tele zoom lens for Pentax. By far the best value of the group.

For the money it is a very good lens. As far as I'm concerned you can't beat it for the price. I have used it quite a bit, and am amazed at the quality verses the price you pay. The "macro" mode is surprisingly good. And I do not notice the "softness" at 300mm most people talk about. I use it at baseball games, and my photos at 300mm are plenty good for me.I would love to have a 70-200 f2.8, but alas, it is out of my price range for now. So, in the meantime, this lens will serve me quite well.

I bought this to use with my Pentax K20D dslr camera. I needed to get closer to some images in the yard and for future use. I love it I sat on the porch and took pictures of the gold finches eating about 15 to 20 feet away. The pictures turned out perfect,it was like I was right next to them. I have had a manual slr camera in the past and used a 500mm lens, the lens bulky and heavy this lens is lightweight and easy to use.I would recommend this lens to anyone one who likes to get close-up and personal to their subjects.

My review mirrors much of what has been said so far: the lens is solid for the pricepoint. It's not spectacular and in low light situations you will need a solid grasp of how to use ISO, aperture, shutter speed and EV compensation in order to end up with the picture you intended. It does have issues with autofocus in low light and sometimes in macro mode but these can be overcome quickly if you just switch to manual focus.
If you are like me and you need a lens that goes beyond the lame zoom of a kit lens and you are a little strapped for cash after dropping the money on a decent camera body, this lens will work just fine.

Do start saving your pennies for another high quality lens though, although I would recommend that if you have this in your arsenal the next lens you should look for is a short range, wide aperture portrait lens. This one will perform well enough for your zoom shots that you'll probably want to wait before replacing it.

The tamron di works very well with my Pentax K10D without the big bucks. Yes, it is soft on full 300 zoom so thanks to other's advice here in the reviews I upped the aperture to F11 and with a little digital sharpening you get an excellent photo. The colors are good.

In the 70-200mm usage the colors and images are very sharp and rewarding.

The macro shots are excellent and you won't be disappointed. Read other reviews for lens usage.

I've had a full-frame fisheye lens since the 1970s, starting with the Pentax Takumar 17mm in screw mount, followed by the Pentax in K-mount, and then finally, the Nikkor 16mm manual focus. So, when Tokina came out with this lens (which is actually the same as the Pentax, I've read in the same focal length), I had to have one for my new Nikon D40. The zoom feature is nice since you can vary the degree of the fisheye effect by backing it off a little from the widest focal length of 10mm. And, though it won't auto-focus on the D40, there's little need for precise focus with this lens due to the extreme depth of field at these focal lengths. Suprisingly, when I mounted the lens on my F100 film body, you naturally get vignetting, capturing the lens hood in the photo, but zoom it out a little and the vignetting disappears. So, with cropping, you could use this lens on a 35mm film body and create some interesting effects. Sharpness seems OK so far. I'm not a lab tech and I don't buy lenses to photograph graph paper or anything else that absoluetly has to be razor sharp from corner to corner. If you just want a fun, creative, lens that guarantees that your photos will always have a different interpretation than your friends who take the same shot, this is the lens for you!

This is one of the lenses that you must have in your bag at all times if you shoot with APS-C sensor size cameras. It produces pin sharp images with great saturation. The construction of this lens is superb and the zoom from 10mm to 17mm very useful. It is important to say that this lens produce 180 degrees of field of view what is the maximum that a fisheye could give to you. It is far better to buy this lens than the Canon 15mm Fisheye or the Sigma as well because mounted on a APS-C sensor size camera, they do not deliver 180 degrees of view. I researched a lot before buying this lens and do not regret buying it at all. I recommend this lens.

I was between this and the Nikon's 10mm 2.8. I ended up getting the tokina because a friend had it and after seeing his pictures with it and after using it a bit on his camera (canon), i decided that 3.5-4.5 was fine for what i needed on a fisheye (actually one of my friends photos was on location, at night, with just one street light, and it looked awesome). The zoom is also nice to have.

Great for close up nature photography, and you are able to get the flower in focus along with the entire garden in the background. The visual distortion makes some interesting photos at the 10 mm zoom level. Combine this lens with the nikkor 18-200 mm VR lens and that is all you need to carry on any trip. I did not see any flare except when shooting into the sun. Lens is 15 ounces, matte finish without a professional look as good as any nikon or canon lens.

I nearly always purchase my equipment from Amazon. However, I found a Sigma mount Bigma at another retailer as a "used but in new condition" lens at 30% less than any place else. So I reluctantly bought my first zoom lens with low expectations. I am pleased to say that my low expectations were unfounded. The Bigma combined with the Sigma SD-14 camera produce fantastic images.

I would like to take the rest of this review to compare the Bigma mounted on my Sigma SD-14 to the Canon 400mm f/5.6L mounted on my Canon EOS 50D. It seems that a lot of potential buyers of the Bigma want to know how it compares to the 400 f/5.6 Canon. I cannot compare lenses strictly, since my Bigma is a Sigma mount, and the Canon a Canon mount, but I will try to compare the two systems and give my opinion on which one I like better.

The easiest comparison, and the one mostly asked by potential buyers of the Bigma is image sharpness. The Canon 400 f/5.6 wins the sharpness category. In fact I don't know how a lens could possibly be any sharper than the Canon 400 f/5.6. That is the Canon lens strength. That is not to take away anything from the Bigma. The Bigma is sharp as far as zoom lenses go, but no zoom lens will be as sharp as the Canon 400. I was pleased to see how sharp this incredible zoom lens is, and did not expect it to be as sharp as the Canon 400. If the Bigma is Tack Sharp, the Canon 400 is Scalpel Sharp.

Now for the versatility contest. No contest, Bigma wins by a huge margin. 50-500 range needs no further comment, other than to say I don't know of a more versatile lens than the Bigma. Maybe there are some, I just don't know of them.

The Canon wins the weight contest. In fact I used to think I was holding a large lens when I was photographing with the Canon 400. Since I got the Bigma, it now feels rather compact. Yes, the Bigma is a substantial lens, but that also helps in stabilizing the lens handheld.

Neither lens has I.S. so we have a draw in that category.

Color and Appearance? Why does Canon make their top lenses WHITE? Bigma wins.

I mentioned earlier that the Canon System was Scalpel Sharp. I said that because comparing the images I get from the Sigma System (lens and SD-14 camera) the Sigma images are much more pleasing and appealing to me than the images I get from the Canon system (Canon EOS 50D and Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens). Although the images from the Canon are super sharp as you would expect from a Scalpel they also appear about as cold when you compare them to the images from the Sigma System. The Bigma lens produces images that are plenty sharp, but when I combine the lens with the SD-14 camera, the Sigma images are much more pleasing than the Canon. The colors are real, and the images are sharp, and I have the versatility to frame the photo with the incredible zoom of the Bigma. I honestly have to say that I believe that this image quality is due to the camera/lens system and not just the camera alone, or the lens alone. Until now I never thought I would own a zoom lens. I still do not think I will ever own a zoom lens for my Canon body. The Sigma SD-14/Bigma system has changed my way of thinking about photography and the zoom/prime lens debate.

I will still use the Canon for birding, fast paced sports, etc. Its a great camera/lens combo for that type of shooting. I now realize though, that even the 800 pound gorilla's in the photography world have their limitations. So, despite the Sigma's limitations, (small buffer, slow processing time, slower autofocus) the Sigma/Bigma is now my primary tool because of the quality of the photo.

In short, I highly recommend the Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma) lens for the Sigma digital SLR. I cannot speak for the Bigma lens on any other camera system because I have not tried it. I would also recommend the Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens even though I like the Sigma system better.

I hope this review might help any potential buyer of either lens.

Add to kit lens and it's all you need. - D. Gerstner -
I switched to digital in 2003, buying a Digital Rebel and this lens shortly afterwards so mine's a very early non-DG version. One of the first things I did was set it up next to my brother-in-law's 300 2.8 EDIF Nikon and shot a distant fencepost. He and I were both stunned. The Bigma was sharper at all apertures, and yes we went to great lengths to keep all other variables equal. I use it wide open at 500 often and anything that ain't sharp is my fault.

Build quality is as good it gets. Beleive me, I do not baby my equipment and this thing still works like the day I first used it.

It's slow, but with a modern body having a cleaner high ISO that is less of an
issue.

USE A MONOPOD! My old Sunpak Ezee Pod folds forward and everything hangs discreetly behind you and carries well by the lens strap. It's heavy, but you can get used to it.

Throw the kit lens in a pocket, keep a tripod nearby, and you'll have pretty much all you'll ever need, incluing a 250mm edge over virtually anyone around you. The range and the potential distance between you and your subject are why you're buying this lens. Use them wisely and you'll be well pleased with the results.

For the price, this lens is very good! - Dean Harnes - Temple, TX
The only problems I have with it so far is that it's heavy(which is expected of a lens this big), the auto-focus isn't as fast as my canon lenses, and the lens filter size is enormous. Other than that, this lens take's spectacular photo's for a "cheap lens." Even without the image stabilization, it still takes pretty sharp pictures. I used it on a dam on a very windy day and even at 500mm the pictures were tack sharp. It's very heavy so I don't hand hold it that often, but the times that I have, the pictures were sharp. Great buy for all you amateurs and hobbyists, if you can afford a better lens, go for it, but this really is great for the price.

As a walk-around lens I really did try to think of the best overall lens that I would want. I recently purchased another Canon body (450D) and instead of getting another 18-55 canon kit lens I opted instead to purchase body only this time. I then did my homework on which lens I thought would be best. Looking at the 18-100+ lenses, the 18-200+ lenses, and the typical overpriced L lenses really put things into perspective for me. I love the range of the kit lenses but REALLy wanted a better quality piece of glass, silent AF, and NO lens extension while zooming. This lens fit the bill perfectly! The fact that Sigma not only made the ultimate kit lens upgrade, but also included the petal hood as well for 0 really made me think about my next purchase and Canon.

Canon wants too much money for their lenses and unless you pay the high price for an L lens you don't even get a lens hood! ENOUGH ALREADY! I am sold on Sigma quality and will continue to support them for my future lens purchases. I have now shot over 3,000+ images with this lens and I have only tossed around 15 total.

I'm an amateur photographer, whose pictures are taken indoors, with no flash. I could not afford higuer-end class just yet, so I opted for this lens, knowing that 18mm, it gives you f2.8. That is pretty awesome. IT works fantastic and smooth. From the beginning, my photos came out pretty sharp, thanks in part to the Optical Stabilization offered, something that other brands cannot offer for that price.

Strongly recommend this lens for your everyday photos. Outdoors and indoors. It is not heavy, it is fast, sharp, and practical.

As always, I read the reviews and talk to people who know about the items in question. Overall, this lens was pretty much equally praised and denounced. I took all opinions into consideration and went ahead with my purchase.

One thing that I do love about my lens, is that it is fantastic in low-light situations. Most people who are new to photography, will no quite grasp the aspect that, sure, a large lens will give you more ability to shoot in darker surroundings, but they fail to comprehend that in doing so, the aperture must be quickened (opened up). What this in essence does is create a razor sharp depth of field. The lens at f1.4 will focus on ONE eye, but leave the other blurry and most complaints are usually stemming from this. When doing portraiture you want to use an aperture no less than f2.0 (personally I like f2.2), this provides a perfect DoF to blur the background and keep eyes, nose and forehead in focus.

I adore the super quick focus from the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), but what I do notice, is the body or housing tends to rattle a bit. Still, it's not overly bad, I can take it out and about and more so the ambient noise will drown out the slight rattling.

Images I captured with this lens are very crisp, as I expect from Sigma and its other line known as Quantaray. Sigma IS more pricey, however, when compared to Canon, but if you can find them, I recommend the Quantaray lenses which are about half the cost. Either lenses brand give me fantastic results, proving that Sigma/Quanataray is worthy to get.

This lens came with a petal-lens-hood and fits my Canon 30D beautifully. No binding or connecting anomalies were noticed, all functions work flawlessly.

The finish is also nice and aesthetically pleasing and protecting the lens is a case which also comes in the package. The case even has a belt-loop for those wanting to carry the lens as a backup or spare. Mind you, I won't be using it, as my Pelican Case fits it nicely with all my other cameras and their gear.

Still the lens is worth getting, in my opinion. You really get what you pay for. If you can afford the high-price, then go for it, if not, I recommend the Canon equivalent.

Excellent lens..my copy is free of any focus issues - Ariel - Los Angeles, CA
I must be lucky. I have six Siggies for the Nikon, and every time I read these horror tales of front or rear focus issues I re-test each and every lens (other than my 10-20mm). Everytime each and every lens passes free of any front or back focus issue. Each test is performed on a tripod to avoid the issue of user error, with two similar objects placed two-three inches apart depthwise and each time the focussed on object is in focus and the other is not. My lenses include 50/1.4, 24-70/2.8, 18-50/2.8, 50-150/2.8, and 150/2.8(macro). Five for five (actually, six for six) is as good as it gets. Perhaps I should quit while I am ahead. I might add that I also have five Nikon lenses all of which are likewise free of focus issues.

Good optical quality when it focuses correctly. Too bad it never focuses. The AF on this lens is the most atrocious thing I've ever seen, less then 20% of images are in focus at most. I've tried micro focus adjustment and it doesn't help. Sent it in to Sigma TWICE and they won't fix it (and their customer support is horrible). Amazon won't let me return it now. A complete waste of 0.

Unfortunately, my 50 suffered from the known front focus issue. At first I didn't test it, I was too anxious to get out and shoot with it, and I noticed that I wasn't getting many keepers after a few days. I thought it was just my fault, until I got frustrated with some really nice shots that I missed from them being out of focus. I tested it and it was focusing about 2-2.5 inches in front of where I wanted it to. A Pretty substantial amount, especially when shooting wide open. I find it really unfortunate that Sigma produces some really fine lenses that can compete with the Nikon counterpart but they still can't get their quality issues under wraps.

Now for the good. The shots that I did wind up getting were stunning : extremely sharp with smooth bokeh. The lens has some heft to it and is well built. I didn't have any issues with the speed of the focus [on my D90] and it was smooth and quiet.

I really hate to take a star off just because I received a faulty copy, but Sigma needs to wake up a bit and get on the ball with their copy variations. Even though I had to return this lens, I will be buying another Siggy 50 in the near future and would recommend this lens to those looking for a really good prime [as long as they know of Sigma's rep on quality].

Photographing Groups - Guidelines for a professional photographer for the Great Group Portraits

Photographing groups of any size can be a challenge, but with the proper lighting, posing and comes close to a winning image able to produce.

The largest number of people in the photo, the smaller they appear, and harder still to see the faces individually. Ideally, you should fill the camera frame with people both vertically and horizontally, and this is achieved by positioning the thought of the subjects. This way you can get closer and appear larger and lighterto see in the picture.

The first thing that is in a group of people standing at a 45 degree angle to the lens, rather than shoulder to shoulder in front of the camera. This means many things. It allows you to get your subject closer, are more subtle, and professional looking. And are not all in the same way if they are a group of the '60s Motown. It was better, he turned toward the center on both sides.

Small groupscan be taken three to eight get together to create a nice picture. Fill the frame camera from top to bottom and from side to side well.

The time to pose for a photo without the photographer's direction, a large group of subjects is usually the shoulder stand in a long series of shoulder. This creates a picture with the poor people and more space at the top and bottom of the frame.

Each larger group of eight or so should be arranged in layers, bothSome people sitting on chairs or on the position on the back steps. A good way to check this, ask any person at the bottom to make sure that the camera can see with both eyes, in order to ensure that not only photograph a portion of their leader.

For a group of around 25, represent a good system would be some people in chairs, some behind, and some sitting on the floor in front. Alternatively, you can add a second row standing on a stage, a higher level than those behindchairs. The point is to fill the frame with both side to side and top to bottom.

The larger the group, the more urgent is that you can put your problems on the stairs. Estimate how many lines you need to do to fill the frame from top to bottom and from side to side. The best approach is to have the problems of line-up for height. Start in the bottom row with the man as possible, and at the end of the upper row with the highest. The person who holds a higher blocking a shortbehind them. Looking at the stadium or grandstand seats are sitting style is very popular in schools and sports facilities, and can obtain good results. Best Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras Review

Things I like:
1. Sharp and great colors! I've been using my kit lens for a while, and I wanted a lens for portraits. The quality of the images make it my preferred lens, and I only resort to my kit zoom lenses during events where I am unable to get close.
2. Light. Agreed that it is mostly plastic, but it is sturdy and looks good. I do not regret this purchase at all due to build quality.
3. Fast! Indoor photos can be shot by hand with natural light due to the large f1.8 aperture. Built in steady shot in every Sony Alpha makes this even better. Shutter speed indoors using just natural light (no flash!) shooting away from the windows can range between 1/8 to 1/120 of a second from ISO 100 to 400. Moving to higher ISO values (which my zooms would have done in order to get similar shots) would probably match the speed, but would have introduced much more noise.
4. Smooth bokeh. None of this hexagonal stuff you see in other lenses.

Things I don't like.
1. AF/MF switch. I have one on my camera, I don't need one on my lens. In order to attain full manual focus I need to swith both the lens and body.
2. 49mm filters. Why not the usual 55mm?
3. Not full frame. If you don't own an A900, and don't ever plan of upgrading to one - this doesn't matter to you.

I would recommend this lens to EVERYONE! It is cheap, and the quality of the images are superb! Furthermore, the fixed focal length forces a photographer to be more aware of how he/she is composing photographs. The lazy method of zooming in and out to fit the subject is no longer applicable. You have to move, and take into consideration objects around the subject. So in the end - you will be a better photographer - or a frustrated one due to the lack of zoom.

I thought that this would be worth a try as a cheap alternative to the 0 Canon factory wide angle lens for my HF10. Turns out it wasn't worth the time it took to order it. If I still had the packaging I would have returned it.

As long the camcorder is set at the widest possible angle, the video is passable. As soon as you zoom in just a bit, only the center 1/3 of the video is in focus and the remaining area is badly out of focus.

If you need a wide angle lens, it is better to pay for the real Canon lens once than to buy this and still have to pay for the real thing.

Finally i got the lens.
The review of the other reviewer is misleading.
The magnifictication increase you can get is mind blowing.

Instead of the closest shooting distance of 1.00m of the Panasonic FZ7's standard macro zoom position (432mm) you can now get as close as 33 cm with this lens.
Have a look at my photo samples and you will understand was is going on.

I did not buy the orignal (expensive) adapter for the FZ7 .... i used a step up ring 52 - 55 mm for 2.00-3.00 $

With another step down ring 58 - 55 mm i use the phantastic lens on my Canons 20D/40D and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS lens with great test results.
As with the Panasonic, also here the minimum shooting distance decreased a big deal (see the sample)

all sample pictures i reduced to the half Pana 2816 > 1408 Canon 3888 > 1944

if you are in macro / close up photography and you don't want to buy an expensive macro lenses get this one.

This lens is fairly inexpensive and the reason for that is while it definitely lets you get really close and the image is definitely larger than without it, the fact is the FZ7 and the FZ30 macro settings are already so good that the image is perhaps 15% or so bigger than without it. If I can I'll post a couple flower images to permit comparison with and without the lens. The camera I have is a FZ7. Because I want as large an image as possible of my focus I am very happy.

I got this lens for 250 dollars reconditioned, it came to me like new. Great travel lens. You do have to crank the ISO up to stop action at 250mm but that is not that big of a deal. The lens does pretty well doing macro stuff which is fun to play with.

Just for everyday shooting this lens covers 90 percent of my needs and stays on the camera almost all of the time. Unless I am going out to shoot something where I specifically need another lens this one stays on the camera which is nice because now I'm not changing lenses outdoors and risking dust on my sensor.

I picked this lens because I wanted a "general/all-around" lens. It does have some slight limitations when zoomed all the way in and using auto focus. But for the price payed and the ease of not having to lug around a bag full of lenses to do what this does, I am very pleased.

Pros- when I want to shoot macro, fairly simple. When I want a wide lens shot- I got it. All in-one-feature. HAPPY with results (color wise- amazing, depends on technique).

Cons- not much, other than I wish I can zoom in more? I need to purchase a hardcore macro lens++. I love abstractions from zooming in super close!

This is really a very good lens. And since it has a focusing motor built in it works fine with the D40. I also have a D300 and naturally it works great on it.

No VR, but it is much cheaper than a Nikon. It is a great "walk around" lens that I normally keep on the D40.

By the way: I got mine at Best Buy. I paid almost 0- more than if I had bought it from Amazon, and I also had to pay sales tax!

Most digital cameras are just one type of paper. Others can, with two, three or even four different types of cards.

The most common type of paper used in consumer level digital cameras is now the SD card. SuchCard can also full of his name, called Secure Digital. The lens is great and I have had a lot of great success taking lunar pictures with it. Was more then worth the price. The tri-pod that they send with the kit can't support the weight of the lens, but that's not a huge concern. Otherwise, everything was great and as promised.

Best Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC (Vibration Compensation) Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Review

Been going back and forth with lenses for a while now, and finally have my bag full. It's filled mainly with Sigma, but when this Tamron came out, I just couldn't resist the 2.8 through the zoom range and the VC (vibration compensation). So how is it? Well, I love it. The other reviewer here mentioned it's a little loud, and that's true. But that doesn't bother me one bit. It's very, very sharp, generally focuses well and quickly, even in low light, and has accurate color representation. At 17mm 2.8 it's a LITTLE softer, but not much, and once you stop down it gets tack sharp, which is true for most lenses anyway.
As an end note, something needs to be said for Tamron's vibration compensation technology. I recently sold my 18-55 VR Nikon kit lens because I got this Tamron, and the VC works at LEAST as well as the VR does, if not measurably better. Yes, there is a jump when you depress the shutter button halfway, as the motor starts up, but it's something that you get used to extremely quickly (or at least I did), and once that's over, the image is still as a quiet summer lake. The VC works VERY well.
Overall, I'd say the build quality of this lens is very good, and it's definitely a keeper.

The one con I'll personally give it is that the macro capability leaves something to be desired. This isn't billed as a macro lens, so I can't really knock it, but my Sigma 17-70 w/macro smokes it.

Other than that, great lens, especially if you can't afford the Nikon lenses.

Some time ago, i bought a tamron 28-75, wich it is an excellent lens, but i really need vibration control, i have shaky hand, for that, i decided buy the new 17-50.
This lens is really really sharp, at any focal lenght, even wide open. the vibration control is fantastic, very usefull at 30mm and beyond. the colors, same nice warm colors than tamron 28-75.
I read that focus speed was improved from the older model, i cant say anything about that,but i have noticed that focus + vc is little bit too noisy.
I really recomend this lens, it will not leave mi camera for a long long time.

Good Lens for the $$s - David Springett - Florida
Great lens for general portraits where flash is not the preferred option.

I'm really enjoying this lens. It's been an excellent choice, and has given me a lot more options than just my Nikon 50mm 1.4 D prime. I use it as my all-time walk around lens now.

Pros:

Construction quality is great. No dust in the lens, built big and tough. I took it camping with me and it held up great.
VC is fantastic. Not too loud for me. I like that I can hear it put itself into action.
Photos are sharp and clean.
Low light photos are no problem.
The lens lock button works well so the lens doesn't creep, but don't really need it. The zoom ring is tight enough to hold it.
Lens is easy to operate in manual focus mode too.
Price price price! Much less expensive when compared to the Nikon counterpart that doesn't have VC.

Cons:

Focus is not prime-lens-fast, but definitely quick enough to get the fast shot off (just comparing to my prime 50mm 1.4).
Doesn't focus well on far away mountains / clouds. Sometimes the focus has a hard time locking on to things my prime has no problems with.
The lens is big, does add size and weight to my Nikon D300, but it balances well on the body.

I was initially looking for the older version of this lens without VC and the AF motor as it is suppose to focus better than on the non VC with built-in focus motor. But when this revised version with VC came out I had to get it because of the following:

1.) No other manufacturer (Nikon/Sigma/Tokina) provide stabilization for this range of zoom.
2.) Previous versions have been known to be a great lens, with image quality rivaling the much more expensive Nikon.
3.) It's half price of the Nikon.
4.) Available on Amazon. :)

Compared to Nikon's 17-55mm which is built _and_ sized like a tank, the Tamron is lighter and sized considerably smaller. The lens is mostly plastic, but the workmanship is great. Both the zoom and focus rings rotate smoothly. I'm very happy with the lens and it's image quality.

Some other lens I shoot with: Nikon 10.5mm fisheye, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Nikon 50mm f1.8.

3 Great Tips for better wedding photos

Wedding season is upon us, and that a record number of broken images in the coming weeks and months.

Canon Digital Camera - from humble origins to World Class Company

In a room with three Japanese men in 1933, began under the name of Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, Canon has come a long way today. It all began with the phantom prototype camera called Kwanon. Right now, Germany is regarded as the leading supplier of camera production. German cameras were extremely expensive. Therefore, Goro Yoshida tried along with two others to have a 35 mm rangefinder camera at a lower price for the production and came with"Kwanon.

But at that time, was one of the problems faced by companies that have no purpose for him. So they decided to tie with Nippon Kogaku Kogyo (who later became the founder of the Nikon) and acquire targets from them. With the use of these lenses, Canon came with the first camera business as "Hansa Canon" in 1936, became a success. Parks are one of the most important places where a photographer can find many interesting topics and challenges in the field of photography. But to shoot a lot of us, in the parks in the same way you shoot a birthday party. Currently I am shooting with a Canon D60, which I was very happy to own when they were first released. One thing to remember when taking panoramas is that the exposures of each frame should be the same. I saw the Canon Deluxe Photo Backpack 200EG and I immediately ordered another, after reading many good reviews on it. I'm really with the huge amount of material and keep it as it hiteasily modified for your specific needs. It was half the price of my bag LowePro old. Its well-designed and constructed with many pockets, zippers, belts external, protective padding and quality materials. I carry the following elements in this bag and takes up more space that I carry in this bag Canon 20D with 28-135IS lens, battery charger for BP-511, battery charger for BP-511, FireWire Reader CF in Lens Cleaning Kit (5x7x1 small box), fourBP-511-batteries, packs of filter Hoya (3), 18-55, 380EX flash, 50mm f/1.8 MkI body 300D/Digital Rebel lens with the grip of the battery, Tiffen filters for the most part huge lens 28-135) table tripod, EF 18-55, a series of targets and quotas, as a flat surface, the rebel wired remote control, etc.

So, you think getting a new lens, but you're not quite sure where to get a first lens or zoom. Both types of lenses have their pros and cons, and you want to ensure that the right decision and meet the objective that best suits your photographic needs.

If you do not already know, is the main difference between a zoom or prime lens, a zoom lens lets you adjust the focal lengthbetween a certain range (eg 18 to 50 millimeters), while a first lens has a fixed focal length.

One might wonder what the point is to use a fixed focal length. Of course, if you have the choice of a lens with the flexibility and lack of flexibility, then surely this is a non-flexible, it is the best right? Well, not quite so simple, because Prime lenses have certain advantages. To begin with, are lighter than zoom lenses becausefewer moving parts. Mechanically, are simpler.

Addition to this, Prime lenses often have openings wider. The opening of a lens determines the amount of light that the purpose may at any time. I've been reading mixed reviews on the Opteks lens for a while, for the price I thought I take a chance. It performs as expected. The zoom mechanism is a tube near the camera that slides, it's not smooth and a little clunky to do, but it works. I don't use the double much, don't really need it, and it does not fit in the bag with it attached to the lens (I think this is a flaw and the bag should have been larger) and there is no separate bag for the doubler - rather then take the chance of dust getting in the lens from screwing and unscrewing the adapter from the lens then attaching the doubler and screwing back on the adapter to the doubler, I just don't use it much. You have to take your time on focusing as it is very sensitive. You are able to handhold it at 650mm (just bearly) but at any other zoom level you must have a good tripod to hold it. This lens is HUGE. I would recommend this lens for nature or senic photography, but it's not fast enough (f8-f16) to use if for any movement and it would be hard to focus on anything moving rapidly.

The lens is absolutely what i expexted it to be, it need good light, a desent tripod, and a remote control for your camera isn't a bad idea. I have not tried it with the 2x converter it was shipped with, instead i tried it out with an 3x converter, and i am really amazed what you get for the money, have in mind what this lens costs, compared with branded lenses from other fabricants, of course the result is not even close to be compared, but still it's absolutely a bargain for us normal deadly ones to try out extreme lenses without robbing a bank....

Cheap for the range it provides. You will def need a monopod or tripod to use this rather long lens. Major drawback is the mechanism to increase zoom. It does not utilise a rotary dial but rather you unlock the lens, draw out the lens to increase focal length and then relock it. Otherwise clear images obtained thus far after 2 weeks of use.

You get what you pay for. You can think of this as a large filter that attaches onto your existing lens, so don't buy this if you're expecting it to fit straight onto the body of your camera. I started shooting this year, and wanted to try using a fisheye, so decided to purchase this to see if I liked it. As a $[...] piece, I can't say that my expectations were very high, although the 50mm f/1.8D Nikkor lens I use it with has been fantastic, and that was about 0. There is a little vignetting on the corners, although I do think that's to be expected with a fisheye. For my taste, the center of the shots (the least distorted parts) where a little hazy for my taste, especially because I thought I'd use it for some sports shots, where I would want that action to be clearer in the middle, but the distortion is consistent and good. Because this is a very nice stylized lens, I'll attach some photos so you can get a better idea of my preferences and see a little better hopefully! The bottom line is $[...] is a great entry option to see if you like the feel of a fisheye, because it is a very specific lens and 0 for a Nikon one was well out of my price range. Couple other things I just thought I'd mention: The "lens cap" on this one is a rubber cap that slides onto the front, which has good fitment, but it's not something that clicks into place or anything (although there is a screw on cap for the back). Also, for some reason, (I think it's the rubber cap), this thing smelled awful when I opened it; air it out for a bit before you put it in your bag...

Edit: Here are two photos I just took with my D90 on a tripod and a 50mm 1.4D lens; the first shot is one with the fisheye lens adapter, the second without. Exact same tripod position, lens, camera, aperture, exposure length, everything. Considering the linear lines of the fence, I think it gives a good picture of what it does. Notice the color differences too.

Fisheye photography is neat, fun, and all that. But in reality, it's only useful in some situations. There are people who definitely over-use fisheye shots, and use it when the shot does not call for it...possibly because the amount they spent on the lens. With that said, most amateur photographers will not be able to justify spending 0+ on a fisheye lens. This is a welcome alternative. While it is true (and should be obvious) that the optical quality, and thus the resulting shots, are not as crisp or clear with this lens adapter when compared to a true fisheye lens. But at one-tenth of the price, there's little to complain about.

PROS:
+ Nearly a 180 degree field of view
+ Fun for some interesting shots
+ Great way to get into super wide angle photography with a minimal investment
+ Adapter is easy to add and remove, and adds functionality to your existing lenses

CONS:
- Not a real fisheye lens (not that you should expect it to be for the price)

i forget what i paid for this...60 bucks maybe? listen, in comparison to a new 0 nikon fisheye lens it very much serves the purpose for me right now. a bit of a blur around the outside edges but i shoot bands mostly while using this. many have been asking for fisheye, but was way too costly until i came across this. not that i don't want to give them quality, but most of the pics are live pics, kinda distorted, glaring lights, sweaty, angry guitarists, kids in the pit lol.....it serves the purpose unitl some more jobs roll in to drop 700 on a pro lens. this easily screws onto your lens. adds a tiny bit of weight but easy to use.

Received the lens last week and tested it out this weekend. It's smaller and more portable than I expected. In my opinion, it is well-made. The instructions were easy to understand. Note, it requires manual focus (which was not difficult). I've bought and used 500mm lenses for both Canon and Nikon 35mm cameras so that's what I'm comparing the Opteka to. As I expected, the lens works best on a bright day. You can improve shutter speed by going to a higher ISO setting - I tested it using ISO 800 which is what I used to routinely use with big lenses on my 35mm cameras. It's not digitally stabilized so you need to brace yourself or use a tripod to get really sharp photos. That said, I got a number of good shots without bracing myself. I tested it using the fully automatic setting and also on the P #program) seting. On a bright day at ISO 800, most shots were at 1/30 or 1/6o of a second. Pictures were clear, with bright colors. I took some shots of a rotating kite and it shot fast enough to freeze the kite. It's about what you should expect in a lens. You can spend a lot more and get a better lens but for most users this lens ought to be fine.

The Skinny:
This lens is cheap. It is well built, feels smooth, but is really a telescope adapted to a camera. This is BAD JUJU (With a twist, read on!)

The Long:
When I first opened the box I was really impressed by the build quality. The machining of the barrel was perfect, as was the paint job. The objective lens was beautiful, and the secondary mirror mounting element was perfectly centered and machined. Everything reeked of professionalism and excellent quality control. The second thing to strike me is that the thing is really massive. It has an extremely large front element, and that strangeness is exacerbated by the secondary mirror mount smack dab in the middle. Upon investigating further I discovered 3 tiny screw in filters that were a .2 and .6 neutral density with a Skylight filter (color warming) These tiny filters screw into the back of the lens where it mounts to the camera, which can make it a real pain if you choose to change or remove one because you have to take off the T adapter first in order fit your fingers in there.

Why all these talk of primary and secondary mirrors? This lens is a Cassegrain reflector telescope. The light enters the front where it is bounced off a concave primary mirror at the rear to a secondary convex mirror at the front, which then travels through the hole in the center of the primary mirror in the rear into the cameras mirror box. Sounds fantastic right? Depends on your application. This configuration yields an incredibly small depth of field when dealing with things inside the hyperfocal distance. Basically anything inside the "infinity" setting has a small depth of field. Were talking almost macro small. 1 to 3 inches maximum. Very depressing unless you consider its true design, a telescope. More on that later.

My first "wildlife" trial shots were taken on a nice steady tripod with the 2 second shutter delay on. I consistently got blurred images due to "Mirror Slap" (The vibration of the mirror raising to expose the shutter) and this was only alleviated by using the mirror lock up and Live View, which is a pain for shooting wildlife to say the least. Secondly the tiny depth of field ruined all shots as the farther part of the subject rapidly blurred in a very unpleasant manner. So wildlife and sports photography are out for this lens.

However considering this lenses telescope construction prompted me to wait for nightfall and try taking some astronomical photos. I was incredibly pleased! At 500mm the moon fills most of the frame, and being beyond the hyperfocal distance the entire thing stayed crisp and sharp, again provided I used the mirror lock up.

Pros: Cheap, Well Constructed, Lightweight for 500mm, Short for 500mm
Cons: Limited Uses, f/8, Tripod (Must), Cable Release (Optional)
Notes: I would give it 2 stars were it not for its incredible build quality. I wish all my lenses were built to this standard!

If you want a 500mm lens, you can spend 4 figures on a Canon lens, or you can buy one of these for less than 1/10 the price. Obviously, you're going to get better results from the Canon, and if you want to sell your photos this is going to be useless. It hasn't got any bells or whistles, no autofocus, no image stabilization, so you're going to need a tripod too.

I would characterize the results from this lens as 'barely acceptable, sometimes'. But still, if you wanted to take professional style photos, you weren't going to get that from a 500mm lens.

Nikon D3, Nikon D300 or D700? Is right for you?

If you have a Nikon D300 and D700 side by side and cover the model number with a piece of tape, you get a little 'hard to tell which is which. If you want a little 'more about the two of them, and it will still hard to see the difference. Select the two bodies and you will still be pressed to hear the difference. What differences are there, then? Almost everything said in the bowels as she did.
